What Does the following Ultrasound Result Indicate?

My current US report: REPORT: The right lobe measures 6.8 x 2.8 x 2.5 cm, the left lobe measures 6.7 x       2.9 x 2.2 cm and the isthmus measures 2-3 mm in AP thickness. As before there       are multiple nodules bilaterally which are solid or complex solid and cystic.       The largest on the right is at the upper pole and measures 1.2 x 1.0 x 1.3 cm       with areas of ringdown artifact indicative of colloid. This has increased       slightly in size but now appears more cystic than on the prior. The largest       nodules on the left are at the upper pole measuring 2.4 x 1.7 x 1.9 cm with       mixed solid and cystic components and at the lower pole measuring 1.9 x 1.3 x       2.0 cm with mixed solid and cystic components. The upper pole lesion is       measuring mildly larger but there is a new central 0.9 cm cystic component. The       lower pole lesion is not significantly changed in size. Do I need any treatments?

Radiologist 's  Response
Hello, thanks for the detailed USG report.
The findings are suggestive of a multinodular goitre. Goitre=enlarged thyroid gland ; multinodular= multiple lumps.
The cystic part suggests liquifaction/colloid.
It usually causes no symptoms other than those arising from a large size- difficulty swallowing, cosmetic appearance etc. Hence, it requires only observation.
At the outset a thyroid function test (blood test) is required to see if the thyroid functioning is normal/under/overactive, and correcting it.
However if any nodules appear worrisome on the ultrasound for malignancy, or the goitre is increasing rapidly, a FNAC(needle test)maybe performed to confirm, and if required surgery.
Hence, based on your report, and assuming a normal thyroid functioning, you can do followup ultrasounds and report to your doctor if any symptoms arise. Feel free to discuss with your doctor/sonologist too.
Don't worry, take care.
